ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Swamps are lowland shallow tropical lakes in rivers floodplains, characterized by annual flood pulses that modulate changes in biotic and abiotic variables. Biological assemblages have different responses to flood pulses, remaining either undisturbed or with significant changes in composition and abundance. Objective: To evaluate how physical and chemical conditions are modified in mixed macrophytes microenvironments and ostracod species assemblages throughout a flood pulse in Rio Viejo swamp, Santander, Colombia. Methods: We characterized physical and chemical variables of microenvironments of aquatic floating plants, during four different hydrologic periods of the flood pulse: low, high, rising, and descending waters, at three stations where the flood pulse have the most important effect. Freshwater ostracods were collected from such microenvironments, identified, and counted. Results: Environmental conditions within microhabitats fluctuated following the flood pulse in the system. Three taxonomic families and six species of ostracods were observed. No differences in the composition and abundance of the spatio-temporal ostracod assemblages were observed, suggesting that they are buffered against environmental changes driven by hydrological fluctuations. Species abundance changed in response to environmental variability. Species such as Keysercypria sp. and Keysercypria sp. 2 are associated to shallower waters and more likely to dense aquatic vegetation cover. Other species showed to be more tolerant to hydrological fluctuations and may be related to ecological plasticity, species such as Cytheridella ilosvayi, Diaphanocypris meridana and Stenocypris major that have been recorded in a variety of aquatic environments and with distributions at continental scale. Conclusions: Flood pulses induced environmental changes in Rio Viejo Swamp, but microhabitats in mixed macrophyte cover seems to be buffered against the hydrological pulse, thus allowing almost undisturbed ostracod assemblages throughout a flood pulse. This updated tropical freshwater dataset contributes towards filling the knowledge gaps related to habitat suitability and distribution of ostracods communities in Colombia.

ABSTRACT

Crypturellus duidae (Tinamidae) is a poor-soil specialist with isolated populations in Amazonia, and is considered restricted to white-sand forest habitats. We report the first record of C. duidae in a peatland forest in northern Peru, in the Putumayo River basin. Our record extends the known distribution of C. duidae between two disjoint areas of occurrence in Peru and Colombia, and shows its presence in peatland forest, another forest type on nutrient-poor soils. Additionally, we report the presence of other poor-soil specialist bird species that were previously registered in peatlands. Together with the new record of C. duidae, these bird records provide evidence of the diversity of poor-soil specialists in peatland forests. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Several studies on the potential use of drosophilid assemblages as bioindicator systems have been carried out in the last years. Nevertheless, the successful application of these organisms in these systems requires adequate filling of several knowledge gaps. In this sense, little is known about drosophilid assemblages in wetlands and flooded areas. The present study provides the first survey of drosophilid species inhabiting such environments in the extreme South of Brazil and compares general beta-diversity patterns between assemblages of flooded versus nonflooded areas. The specimens were collected with banana-baited traps, and the assemblages recovered in eight wetlands of the southernmost coast of Brazil were compared to those recovered from seven nonflooded areas of the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. A total of 5028 and 2571 individuals encompassing 27 and 37 species were collected in the flooded and nonflooded areas, respectively. The differential species composition patterns presented between these areas was statistically supported, which seems to be related to the lower beta-diversity presented by swamps, especially in regard to dominance patterns. So, the open and climatically harsher environment provided by wetlands possibly constitutes a hostile environment for the entry and, mainly, for the persistence of several native Drosophilidae species, in contrast to some exotic and more plastic species (as Drosophila simulans and Zaprionus indianus). Since the diversity gradient of flooded areas does not seem to be related to the conservation status of the swamp, our results question the use of Drosophilidae species as bioindicators of environmental disturbance and antropic influence in wetlands.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective . To estimate the genetic diversity of the Anadara tuberculosa en five mangrove swams of Tumaco, Nariño, Colombia using as a mitocondrial molecular marker the cytochromo oxidase sub-unit I (COI). Materials and methods. A total of 50 individuals were collected from the San Jorge, La Tiburonera, El Pajal, La Playa y Bajito Vaquería mangrove swamps, randomly selecting 10 specimens of each zone. The tissue sample was worked with absolute alcohol at ambient temperature in microtubes. DNA was extracted, and the mitocondrial DNA was amplified using the PCR technique (polymerase chain reaction). The amplified and quantified products of PCR were sequenced on both sides (Macrogen). Each one of the obtained sequences was edited and aligned. Later, the parameters of genetic diversity (haplotypical and nucleotidical) were measured, and the analysis of distribution between frequency pairs (Mistmach distribution) was elaborated. Finally, the analysis of nucleotidic variation and population structure (AMOVA) was completed. Results. The amplified product gene weighed 710 bp. The haplotypical diversity reported for all the populations was high (0.683±0.060) and the reported nucleotídical diversity was low for all the populations (0.040±0.020). The AMOVA results indicate that the variance amongst populations is low (4.20%) and that the variance within populations is high (95.80%). Conclusions. The studied populations are not structured and although there is a decrease of natural banks, the genetic diversity is high.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Mangrove swamps and forests cover over 137,000 km2 distributed latitudinally among subtropical zones, 7% of which are in Brazil, with a greater density in the countrys northernmost region. Considering that the community of Myxomycetes recorded for this environment is hardly known, three areas located in the state of Maranhão were investigated. Two field trips were conducted, one at the beginning of the rainy season and another during the dry season. In each area, two plots (125 m2) equidistant 100 m apart from each other were surveyed. In these areas, standing dead tree trunks and dead branches still attached to the mother plant that were above the tideline, were examined. On these same occasions, samples of the aerial litter and from the cortex of living trees (Rhizophora) were collected for the preparation of moist chambers cultures. Twenty-one specimens were obtained from field and moist chambers, belonging to 11 species, distributed in nine genera and five families. Seven species are new records from Maranhão. There was a predominance of r-strategist (73%) over K-strategist (27%) species. Cribraria violacea, Comatricha tenerrima, Echinostelium minutum, and Fuligo septica are new worldwide records from mangrove environments, and Oligonema flavidum is reported for the first time from Brazil.

ABSTRACT

The space-time variation of vascular aquatic vegetation was studied in Maria Arriba, San Sebastian, Purísima and Momil swamps of the lower Sinú swamp complex, located in the department of Córdoba (Colombia), covering hydrological periods occurred in one year. The area of study was divided in four sectors and by the linear intercept method it was determined the abundance and frequency of the hydrophytes. They were recorded 39659 individuals distributed in 24 families, 30 genus and 35 species. The highest abundance of species was presented in Momil with 18582 individuals being the family Lemnaceae the most representative. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows that not exist statistically significantly different in the abundance of the species of aquatic plants from sampling months (F = 1,04; GL = 11; p = 0,083), however, it has demonstrated the incidence of a hydrological period on the plants dynamic growth, some species disappear in dry season, others survive for a short period of time, while others like Lemna minor L. y Salvinia auriculata Aubl. increase in the rainy season.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the toxicity of the sediment on 7 points located in front of drainage canals river on the beaches of Santos-SP, together with the characterization of the community structure of benthic macrofauna. Were performed campaign summer (February 2008) and the campaign winter (July 2008). The toxicity tests with sea-urchin Lytechinus variegatus treatments were performed in elutriate and sediment-water interface, as ABNT NBR 15350/2006. The benthic macrofauna wasidentified as Mollusca, Crustacea and Polychaeta, and it was calculated mean density (ind/0,026m²) and Polychaeta dominance. In campaigns for summer and winter treatment sediment-water interface showed toxicity at all points, while the treatment elutriate showed toxicity at points 6 and 7. Polychaeta dominance was negatively correlated (r = -0,56) with granulometry and positively correlated with organic matter for the winter campaign, being some of these species indicators of polluted and anoxic environments.

ABSTRACT

Aims: The aim of the study was to carry-out laboratory–scale bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon polluted mangrove swamps using cow dung as source of limiting of nutrients. Methodology and Results: In a 70 days study, the cow dung treated polluted soil had its total culturable hydrocarbon utilising bacterial/fungi, heterotrophic bacterial and fungal counts increased progressively from the 28th day to the 70th day. The control set- up showed very slight increment in its microbial growth. Alkaline pH was observed in all the treatments and control during the study period. The conductivity values of cow dung decreased progressively. In the cow dung treatment option, the nitrate concentration decreased from 35.44 mg/kg to 14.28 mg/kg. Phosphate concentration of cow dung option decreased from 25.41 mg/kg to 9.31mg/kg. The control had the nitrate decreased from 8.42 mg/kg to 6.98 mg/kg. Percentage total organic carbon (% TOC) in the cow dung option decreased from 4.06% to 0.96%. Control experiment had the % TOC decreased from 3.32% to 2.99%. Studies using Gas chromatographic analyses showed that 0%, 49.88%, and 69.85% of Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) were lost at zero hour, 28th day and 70th day respectively in the cow dung option. In addition, in the control experimental set-up, 0%, 7.14% and 13.42% of TPH were lost at zero hour, 28th day and 70th day respectively. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The use of organic nutrient sources such as cow dung has shown good promises in bioremediation of crude oil impacted Mangrove Swamps in the Niger Delta. The next line of action is to transfer the technology to pilot scale study.

ABSTRACT

The present paper contains an approach to systematize the study of the State of Paraná coastal plains, in the southern part of Brazil. It contains in general some geographical and geological data, documented by maps, sketches and photographs. In the initial stage the coastal plain represents a marine ingression, caused by faulting. This ingression penetrated the valleys of a not yet determinated geological landscape. Ended the movement of deeping by faulting begins the epirogenic ascension and building of the barriers and beach ridges. An intensive sedimentation caused the lagoons and bays obstruction. This work refers mainly to t33 he sedimentary formations and the coastal plains is classified in the following way for the study in consideration to the morphology and origin: Marine sedimentation - shore, barrier and beach ridge; Intermediary sedimentation - mangrove swamps, mud and sand banks and mangrovito; Continental sedimentation - dunes and terrestrial alluvion. There are also presented some data about the rocky coast and vegetation.
